Please tell every dog or cat owner you know. Even if you don’t have a pet, please pass this to those who do.
Over the weekend, the doting owner of two young lab mixes purchased Cocoa Mulch from Target to use in their garden. The dogs loved the way it smelled and it was advertised to keep cats away from their garden. Their dog (Calypso) decided the mulch smelled good enough to eat and devoured a large helping. She vomited a few times which was typical when she eats something new but wasn’t acting lethargic in any way. The next day, Mom woke up and took Calypso out for her morning walk. Halfway through the walk, she had a seizure and died instantly.

Although the mulch had NO warnings printed on the label, upon further investigation on the company’s web site,

This product is HIGHLY toxic to dogs and cats.

Cocoa Mulch is manufactured by Hershey’s, and they claim that “It is true that studies have shown that 50% of the dogs that eat Cocoa Mulch can suffer physical harm to a variety of degrees (depending on each individual dog). However, 98% of all dogs won’t eat it.”

Cocoa Mulch, which is sold by Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and other garden supply stores contains a lethal ingredient called ‘Theobromine’. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks.

Theobromine is in all chocolate, especially dark or baker’s chocolate which is toxic to dogs. Cocoa bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Allie Brosh and Hyperbole and a Half are back after a year and a half of internet silence. That’s incredibly good news for people who like awesome things.

I point this out for two reasons:

It contains one of the best evolutionary biology illustrations of all time (above), about how we are at the end of a long line of things that successfully avoided getting chewed to death.

It is one of the greatest explorations and personal stories of depression and mental health that I have ever seen, and should really be read by every single damn person on Earth.

I know I’ve already reblogged the return of HaaH twice today, but this is a particularly good set. Also those tags sum up my general reaction to my own depression most days … why are our brains so easily turned against us?

Yup. Allie’s commentariat on depression is always so spot on that often the realism of her cartoons reduces me to near-uncontrollable sobbing. Important read, but go in with caution.

I don’t care if you’re joking. I don’t care if you think ‘It will push them to work harder.’ Because it isn’t a joke, and it will not always make someone want to work harder to prove you wrong.

That’s not transphobic, though. He’s making a point that because the LGBT agenda is “barreling forward at full-speed” that the B and T of LGBT is being left behind. Everyone is focusing on the L and the G that there are people who have no idea what the B and T even stand for. He’s not being transphobic or making a slight meant to make fun of or harm the bi and trans* community. He’s making a point that no one is focusing on them because they’re focusing on the lesbian and gay community.

Mother. Fucking. This.

People really need to realize that EVERYTHING Colbert says while on camera is satire.

Satire: The use of humor, irony, exaggeration, or ridicule to expose and criticize people’s stupidity or vices, particularly in the cotext of a play, novel, fiilm or other works.

He is not making a transphobic joke. He is not honestly saying that bi and trans people do not count/matter/exist. He is making humor in order to shed light on the fact that they are forgotten.

He is doing this to raise fucking awareness that there is more to LGBT than LG. He is raising a big flag that says “Hey, don’t forget about these guys. They count. They matter. Why aren’t you doing anything about them? Why aren’t they discussed?” He is not trying to say “They don’t matter.”

So please stop with the self righteous, self pity, “social justice” comments unless you know what you are talking about.

I do appreciate that Bisexual is matched with bacon. I rather enjoy bacon.

This is why I love the Colbert Show.

In my creative writing class in university, we were having a class discussion on gender in writing. We were talking about the challenges that might come from writing from the point of view of a character of a different gender than you. The male professor said something like “As a guy, sometimes when I read books by women I think they have trouble portraying men because they want to write all men as testosterone-crazed maniacs, and that’s just not what men are.” Okay, fair enough; I’m sure that’s a challenge for some female authors.

Then the discussion turns into the question of which gender is generally better at writing the opposite gender. The professor goes, “There’s a very well-respected professor on this campus who believes that men write female characters more accurately and realistically than women do. I won’t say who he is, though.”

I’m like, “Wait, this is a GUY?”

The professor nods.

“Wait- what - then what does HE know??”

“Well,” my professor says with a smug, condescending smile that makes it clear that he agrees with this guy’s opinion, “he’s not a woman, but he is a very well-respected academic who knows a lot about literature.”

WOW. Okay. So apparently not only can women not understand men well enough to write them, but they also can’t understand THEMSELVES well enough to write women. And my professor knows this because some academic guy says so, because apparently being able to analyze literature also means you know how it feels to be a woman, to the extent that you can judge over actual women how women realistically behave.

It made me especially mad that he wouldn’t even tell me who the professor was. If there’s a sexist douche professor on campus I’d rather know who he is so I know whose classes to avoid!

Omg, that reminds me of a story my friend told me of her CW class. He was a douchebag that wanted to submit a poem on a piece of bark, because it was part of the poem or something.

Anyway, she wrote a story that was actually a bit autobiographical. It was very emotional and very well described and personal. Not that uncommon an experience, either. She shared it with the group and the poem-on-a-strip-of-bark guy kept saying that the character’s reactions, feelings and actions were not “believable”. He was so obnoxious that it came out that it was actually based on my friend’s own experiences, but he stuck to his guns.

Pregnancy scares, the way periods work, panic, paranoia and the relief of not being pregnant after all. 100% not believable.
